Biography

Rafael L. Silva, who was born on June 18, 1994, is an actor of Brazilian-American heritage. He gained recognition for his portrayal of Carlos Reyes in the popular television series 9-1-1: Lone Star. Silva was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and initially had ambitions of following in his grandfather’s and uncles’ footsteps by pursuing a career in animal care. However, when he was thirteen years old, his family moved to the United States, which resulted in a significant change in environment. This shift caused Silva to experience culture shock, leading to increased introversion and a fear of public speaking.

In order to overcome his fear and shyness, Silva began exploring acting during his high school years. He saw it as an opportunity to directly confront his anxieties, explaining, “I started acting when I was a junior in high school. I used to be very afraid to speak in public. I figured if you were going to be afraid of something, you might as well be in the eye of the hurricane. So I started acting because I was afraid of speaking in public…” After completing his studies at Pace University in 2017, Silva appeared in television shows such as Madam Secretary and Fluidity.

In addition to his acting career, Silva is an enthusiastic practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has trained alongside renowned martial artist Royce Gracie. He also possesses skills in dancing and is fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. Silva is openly gay, and his orientation is a part of his public identity.
